ETEBU,A PROFESSOR IN BAYELSA'S LENS

The biblical say that a prophet is not honoured in his own country cannot after all be generalized,as the people of Bayelsa state can always attest to the the professional capabilities of Prof.Ebitimitula Etebu,Vice Chancellor of Bayelsa Medical University (BMU).

His appearance in every pubbli function, particularly at the assemblage of medical practitioners gives more room for the Odi-born medical doctor to be spotted.

National Investigator's Ayebaitari Easterday and select Journalists caught him at the gathering of Medical Laboratory Scientists in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital.Excerts:

Q- You aren't a new person to us here, but can you for the purpose of this interview give us your name sir?

A- My name is Professor Ebitimitula Nicholas Etebu, Vice Chancellor of the Bayelsa Medical University (BMU).

Q-This is Day 2 of the event put together by the Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, drawing the almost single largest crowd of medical professionals here in Yenagoa. How do you estimate the attendance and the success of the event?

A-The event by my assessment is very successful. You can attest to the fact that what you have here is the gathering of who is who in the Medical Laboratory Scientists association in Nigeria.

I was here yesterday, and you can see the cream of people drawn from different parts of the country to gather in Bayelsa. For a single crowd of professionals to fill this auditorium (Chief D.S.P Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall to capacity to the extent that some participants almost had no places to sit is to tell you the level of mobilizing and success of the event, and I am truly delighted in it.

Q- Are you satisfied with the number of Medical Laboratory Scientists in Bayelsa?

A- I am not too impressed, and that is because some of our people are yet to identify the importance and value in the profession. But before the creation of Bayelsa we never had the number we have now,so hopes are not lost. There is the printer that in the future we will increase and do better than what we are doing now.

And I want to also say here that this program has created added awareness of what Medical Laboratory Scientists are doing in the state and outside of it which is a multiplier effect in terms of knowledge uplifting, and this certainly will improve our status in the Nigeria nation.

Q- Can you please enlighten society on the major functions of the Medical Laboratory Scientist sir?

A- The Medica laboratory scientist performs diagnostic testing of blood and body fluids in clinical laboratories. His work begins with the receipt of the patent or client specimens and terminates with the delivery of the test results to the physicians and other healthcare providers. So much of the works of the medical laboratory scientist include ensuring specimen quality, interpreting the results obtained from tests,data-logging, testing control products, performing calibration, maintenance and validation amongst others.

Q- Can you use this opportunity to shed more light on the state and vision of the Bayelsa Medical University?

A- The strategic focus of the Bayelsa Medical University as I have always reiterated is to be able to produce medical professionals that will not only be capable of graduating from the university but being employed in the careers in the diverse fields of medical science in every part of Nigeria and outside its shores.

We have putting certain measures in accomplishing this all-important vision by by engaging in academic collaborations, partnership and linkages with similar institutions within and outside the country, recruit  highly qualified and experienced academics from any part of the world as well as acquire the most modern medical research equipment and facilities that is capable of delivering on the mandate set out for us.

Q- What is your charge to students of the university?

A- They should know that what we cannot compromise is the standard we have desired to achieve. They should take their studies very serious because the world has been, and is increasingly more competitive.
